What is an anti-narcotics inspection?

An underwater anti-narcotics inspection is the systematic search of the hull, appendages and hard-to-access areas of a vessel or port facility, aimed at detecting illicit substances attached or concealed below the waterline.

MARES CHILE performs these inspections as a Recognized Security Organization (RSO) under the guidelines of the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code), in coordination with shipowners, shipping agents, insurance companies and port authorities.

Every inspection produces a security certificate with photographic and video records of the hull's condition at the time of inspection.

Who requests this service?

Shipowners and shipping lines: Verification of hull security condition before or after calling at high-risk ports.
Marine insurance companies: Inspection required for policy coverage or claims resolution.
Shipping agencies: Coordination of security inspections for vessels under their representation in Chilean ports.
Port authorities: Security inspections at terminals and berthing faces under ISPS protocol.
Aquaculture companies: Survey of floating facilities to detect foreign objects on farming structures.

Regulatory framework: the ISPS Code

The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code is an IMO regulatory framework establishing security requirements for ships and ports. In Chile it is implemented and supervised by DIRECTEMAR.

As an RSO (Recognized Security Organization), MARES CHILE is authorized to conduct security assessments, develop security plans and perform certified inspections under this code, for both ships and port facilities.

ISPS security levels (1, 2 and 3) determine the intensity of security measures. Underwater anti-narcotics inspections are part of level 2 and 3 protocols.

National Authority Background

Experience at the top of Chile's ISPS system

The MARES CHILE team includes a partner who spent nearly a decade leading the implementation of the ISPS Code —for both ships and port facilities— at the national level within the Maritime Authority of Chile (DIRECTEMAR).

This first-hand knowledge of the standards, procedures and evaluation criteria applied by the competent authority translates into inspections and security assessments performed with the technical rigor and regulatory language the system demands. We don't interpret the ISPS Code — we know it from the inside.
